Climb the prize ladder by adding and subtracting fractions
$5.00
2/8 + 4/8 = 6/16. Every Year 5 teacher has seen it. In this game it's one of the wrong options, next to other answers students really give, like forgetting to change a half into tenths. Students add and subtract fractions with the same and related denominators, including answers greater than 1, to climb a quiz-show prize ladder to $1 million. It opens on a contestant ticket.
Two lessons of 45–60 minutes. Lesson 1 starts with warm-up questions, a refresher on same and related denominators, a worked example and a warm-up round with fraction bars, then the 12-question game. In Present mode, students click A to D: a correct answer shows the working, a wrong one shows a hint and Try again (PowerPoint, Keynote and Google Slides). For rotations, use the 12 task cards and the recording sheet with its fold-under answer strip.

Lesson 2 covers the Case of the Party Pizza, Becca's trivia board game savings task and writing your own $1 million question. A reflection finishes it.
