Three levels, three pictures, one class display. Every student in the room converts grams to kilograms at the level that suits them, and every finished picture goes on the wall for October. The pictures are friendly, not scary: a bat flying across the full moon (Bronze), a spider family on a web (Silver) and a wise owl on an autumn branch (Gold). The booklet opens on a bakery flour sack tag.
The three levels
- Bronze (Beginner), 12 questions: whole numbers and tenths, easy comparisons, one-step word problems.
- Silver (Intermediate), 16 questions: tenths and hundredths, trickier comparisons with <, > and =.
- Gold (Expert), 20 questions: up to 3 decimal places and two-step word problems.
Every page shows its level badge, so you can hand out sheets without making a fuss about who is on which level.
How it runs
- Lesson 1: warm-up, key words, converting with a place value chart and three worked examples (convert, compare, word problem). Students start their level.
- Lesson 2: students finish their questions, colour their picture and check it against the answer picture on the slides.
- Lesson 3 (optional): move up a level or do the More practice page, then put the pictures up.
Maths covered
- MA3-NSM-01: recognise whole-number and decimal representations of mass, convert between units and solve problems with different units of mass
- MA3-RN-02: compare decimals up to 3 decimal places
