48 editable teacher slides, a 19-page booklet and a quadrilateral rotational-symmetry investigation

Help Year 5 and Year 6 students classify shapes by their properties and justify their decisions. This 2D shapes and polygon properties lesson pack brings together quadrilateral classification, triangle types, regular and irregular polygons, and line and rotational symmetry.
Students trace a square, a non-square rectangle, a non-square rhombus and an oblique parallelogram. They keep the centre fixed, test clockwise turns of 90°, 180°, 270° and 360°, then record the matching positions, smallest matching turn and order of rotational symmetry. Worked answers show why the square has order 4 and the other examples have order 2. A reasoning task asks why four equal sides alone do not guarantee order 4.

The teacher slides include editable shape outlines and tracing copies for demonstrations in editing view. The two investigation worksheets provide marked centres, a results table and explanation prompts. Students compare testing a turn with testing a mirror line.
A clickable gallery opens shape posters with sides, angles, parallel lines, diagonals and symmetry. Students classify triangles by sides and angles, complete a quadrilateral properties table, and build a family tree showing how squares, rectangles, rhombuses and parallelograms are related. The pack uses non-square and oblique examples so that students can compare the properties of each shape.
Students identify regular and irregular polygons, distinguish convex from concave shapes, find parallel and perpendicular lines, and draw polygons on dot paper. The Missing Mosaic Tile case file turns these properties into clues, followed by a labelled shape-poster activity.
48 editable teacher slides and a teacher PDF, plus a 19-page A4 student booklet. Colour and black & white booklets are supplied as PDFs and editable PowerPoints. The download includes worked answers, differentiation choices, instructions, terms of use and fonts.
The classification and symmetry work supports NSW Stage 3 MA3-2DS-01. Right-angle and perpendicular-line tasks contribute to MA3-GM-03; this pack is part of a wider geometry sequence. Polygon angle sums are clearly labelled as an optional Stage 4 extension.
Open the slides in PowerPoint or import them into Google Slides. Use presentation view for the poster-gallery links and editing view to move or rotate a tracing shape. Print student booklets at A4 actual size and use tracing paper to investigate turns.
Continue the geometry sequence with translation, reflection and rotation, classifying and measuring triangles and types of angles and protractor practice.
