Help Year 5 and Year 6 students describe how a shape moves, rather than simply guess whether it looks different. This transformations lesson pack teaches translation (slide), reflection (flip) and rotation (turn) with explicit examples, grid worksheets and a clickable quiz.
Students translate shapes by a given number of squares, reflect across mirror lines, and rotate shapes about a marked centre. They describe quarter, half and three-quarter turns and distinguish clockwise from anticlockwise movement. A comparison table shows which properties stay the same and how orientation changes.

The 10-question digital activity asks students to choose the translated, reflected or rotated image, identify mirror lines and reflect a point. Each question has an answer slide explaining the reasoning. The booklet also includes a printable version for independent practice.
A short explicit-teaching section distinguishes a map square from an exact coordinate point. Students learn numbered lines, horizontal x and vertical y axes, the origin (0, 0), and x before y in ordered pairs. They read and plot first-quadrant points, then practise positive and negative coordinates in all four quadrants, including points on axes. Three new booklet pages and worked answers support independent practice.
Students reflect points across the axes and translate a triangle on the coordinate plane. They investigate rearranging a shape without changing its area, solve The Case of the Tile Mix-up, then design a canteen splashback using transformations and a materials budget.
58 editable teacher slides, a teacher PDF and a 20-page A4 student booklet. Both colour and black & white booklets are supplied as PDFs and editable PowerPoints. Teacher notes, worked answers, instructions and fonts are included.
Getting started, On track and Challenge choices help you select grid practice or the more demanding coordinate and design tasks. The transformations and position work supports NSW Stage 3 MA3-2DS-01 and MA3-GM-01.
Open the .pptx in PowerPoint or import it into Google Slides. Present the quiz to use its answer links. Print the booklet for students to draw, explain and check their transformations.
Connect this work with types of angles and protractor practice and classifying and measuring triangles.
